Damar Hamlin's collapse offers mental health lessons in trauma, vulnerability for NFL players and fans

As millions watched the January 2, 2023, Monday Night Football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills, an unprecedented tragedy happened: Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, collapsed on the field after tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. 

The probable cause was a heart arrhythmia, or cardiac arrest, sparked by the impact of the collision. As of January 5, 2023, Hamlin was awake and improving but remained in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Psychologists say science offers lessons to pro players, youth players, and fans on how to recover from feelings of grief, helplessness, and vulnerability.
