As millions watched the January 2, 2023, Monday Night Football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills, an unprecedented tragedy happened: Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, collapsed on the field after tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.Â
The probable cause was a heart arrhythmia, or cardiac arrest, sparked by the impact of the collision. As of January 5, 2023, Hamlin was awake and improving but remained in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
