Test Taking Tip: Eliminating Wrong Answers

The EPPP is more than just content mastery. Successfully navigating the EPPP involves understanding how to take the exam and using inference, deductive reasoning, and critical thinking skills to arrive at the correct answer. When you’re unsure of the right answer, you can often reason your way through a question by strategically eliminating wrong options. Here’s how:

  1. Look for absolutes: Words like always, never, or every are usually red flags. Most EPPP questions favor nuanced answers.

  2. Check for contradictions: If an answer conflicts with ethical principles, evidence-based practice, or the stem of the question, it’s probably incorrect. If an answer is partially correct but also partially incorrect, then it’s entirely incorrect.

  3. Focus on core concepts: Ask yourself, “Which option best reflects the psychological principle or theory being tested?” Often, your knowledge of the main idea will point you to the correct choice.

  4. Use partial knowledge: Even if you don’t know the answer perfectly, ruling out one or two clearly wrong answers dramatically improves your odds.

Remember: You’re not just guessing — you’re reasoning logically, which is exactly what the EPPP is testing. Confidence comes from knowing you can think your way through tricky questions, not from knowing everything.
