Antipsychotic medications, also known as neuroleptics, are broken down into 2 generations: Typical or First Generation and Atypical or Second Generation. First generation antipsychotics are often associated with significant extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) that are typically more severe in nature. The second generation antipsychotics have a decreased risk of EPS but can be associated with metabolic effects like significant weight gain and the development of metabolic syndrome.
