General Guide (All Licensures)

The state of Alabama currently has no laws specific to teletherapy practice. Providers are required to follow all federally mandated laws. Check your state board for additional information.

Psychology

Alabama Board of Psychology recommends using the APA’s guidelines for teletherapy practice. See APA Guidelines for Practice of Telepsychology.

Social Work

Social Workers using teletherapy should make reasonable attempts to become familiar with teletherapy technologies and assess the advantages and disadvantages of providing teletherapy services.

Marriage & Family Therapy

Therapists must complete basic training and education in the delivery of teletherapy prior to delivery care. This training must also include suicide prevention in relation to electronic communication. See Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-8-.09: Technology-Assisted Training/Education Requirements of Profession [PDF] (page 56).

Counseling

Counselors providing teletherapy services should adhere to all ethical standards of electronic care. See Counseling Ethics Code Part A.12 - Technology Applications [PDF].
